By David Jackson.

Maintaining good public relations has always remained an integral part of a business. From traditional press conferences and events to being active on social media, PR has come a long way in 2012. Here is the list of the major public relations trends that were in news in 2012.

Social Journalism – Social media has given a platform to the customers to come forward and voice their opinion freely. The growing popularity of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest has allowed customers and other groups to come forward and share their views over a product or service. 2012 saw social media becoming the beacon of consumer movement. There has been a shift in trend from user review sites to social networks where customers can openly discuss anything. PR strategies in 2012 revolved around various social networking sites trying to connect with the customers and clarifying anything that was negative from the point of view of the business. Social journalism is now an essential component of any news organisation’s PR strategy, completely changing the face of journalism.

Shift to Mobile Platform – Mobile phones have become an indispensable part of our lives. The improved functionality of tablets and smartphones has made it easier for users now to access the internet anywhere on the go. It is estimated that 10% of all internet traffic will come from global mobile usage by the end of 2013. The simplicity and immediacy in receiving individualised content have sparked the trend of personalisation.

Imaging and Pictures – Connecting with the stakeholders went to another dimension with the meteoric rise of Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram. Capitalising on the emotional prowess of pictures, PR firms tried to penetrate the customer psyche with images, pictures and not to forget infographics.

With the new year almost round the corner, let us see what other interesting PR trends are in store for us.
