Tablet Sales to Touch 126 Million Mark This Year

By David Jackson.

Tablet computers have come a long way and it seems the trend will continue to grow in the coming years as well. According to the survey by the market research company, IHS iSuppli, the tablet market is going to witness a huge growth and reach 126.6 million by the end of the year. Growth in this tablet segment is expected to rise 35% from the 55.2 million units in the year 2011.

The company also predicted that the 9-inch tablet segment, which is predominantly dominated by the Apple iPad will account for the majority of tablet display shipments in 2012. Moreover, the segment that will witness the fastest growth will be the 7-inch screens segment mostly used in the Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Tab, Barnes Noble’s Nook Tablet, Amazon’s Kindle Fire as well as various other tablet products that run over Google’s Android operating system.

The 7-inch segment where Android-based devices are the predominant rulers is also forecast to almost double from 20.8 million units last year. Apple is also going to play a very important role in this as it plans to enter the 7-inch segment later this year.

The company also stated that among the manufacturers of the LCD displays that are used in tablets, South Korea-based LG and Samsung presently dominate the market with a respective shipment market share of 42% and 38%. Both Samsung and LG are the suppliers of LCD displays used in Apple devices.

Media tablets are increasingly becoming the biggest growth driver in the market for the small and medium display market. The rage started with the iPad and now many manufacturers have romped up into the market to capitalise on the growing interest of the users for tablet computers. With Google coming up with its own tablet and many inexpensive tablets flooding the market, the segment undoubtedly is going to witness a huge growth in the times to come.
